Luke Kennard: From Forward Prize Poet to the 2026 'Black Bag' Phenomenon.

If you are tracking the bleeding edge of contemporary British literature, Luke Kennard is a name you simply cannot ignore. Long celebrated as a prodigious talent in modern poetry, Kennard has recently solidified his reputation as one of the sharpest, most inventive novelists of the decade.

With his critically acclaimed 2025 poetry collection, The Book of Jonah, and his brand new, wildly successful 2026 novel, Black Bag, the Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham is currently dominating literary conversations.

The Rise of a Literary Polymath:

Born in 1981 in Kingston Upon Thames, Kennard’s career started with an explosive entry into the poetry scene. He won an Eric Gregory Award in 2005 for his debut prose poetry collection, The Solex Brothers. Just two years later, he became the youngest writer ever shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prize for Best Collection with The Harbour Beyond the Movie.
